Thaipusam Malaysia | Devotee The Film

Documentary

What is Thaipusam? Every year, devotees gather at Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to honour Lord Murugan, the destroyer of evil. This festival is a must-see in Malaysia!

This video is a film I made about Baskar, a devotee who takes part in Thaipusam every year.
He usually carry a Kavadi, a large decorated shrines which are supported around his waist. Kavadi-bearers fast for 48 days in advance, eating only sattvic food once a day, and enter into a trance state before making the short pilgrimage. This penance also involves also extreme piercing such as passing small spears through their tongues and cheeks; believed to give great power of endurance. Other body piercings performed include metal hooks with limes, oranges or small urns.
