Cock Fight in the Philippines

Stories

Cockfighting is hugely popular in the Philippines, dating back to the Spanish invasion. Worldwide, this may be the world’s oldest spectator “sport” going back thousands of years to ancient civilizations.

Before the fight, knives are attached to the cock‘s leg. The birds fight until one of them dies or is critically injured. Illegal in some countries, it is the national Sunday pastime in the Philippines and a lucrative, taxable business. Spectators gamble their best Pesos on the bird. Entrance, entertainment and food are part of the capital too in this lively weekly event.

The fighting champions are specially bred birds, conditioned like professional athletes prior to sport events. To raise and train one is an investment in money, time and skills.
